Sanders and Joseph Combine for 45 as Lincoln Beats Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Isis Sanders and Laini Joseph combined to score 45 points as the Lincoln women's basketball team beat Lewis, 67-65, on the road on Saturday (Dec. 6).

Sanders finished with 20 points, a steal and an assist. Joseph, meanwhile, led the Blue Tigers with 25 points, grabbed six rebounds, recorded five steals and dished a pair of assists. The Blue Tigers forced the Flyers into 21 turnovers and notched an impressive 17 steals, with LU scoring 22 of its points off of those takeaways.

Lincoln (4-5, 2-2 GLVC) had to mount a furious comeback, as Lewis (2-7, 1-2 GLVC) outscored the Blue Tigers in the first quarter, 25-5. Lincoln finished with more points than Lewis in each of the remaining periods, including going on a 22-9 run in the third quarter to pull within 50-46 of the Flyers.

The Blue Tigers eventually erased their early deficit by tying the game at 61 on a layup by Kiara Cabrera following a steal from Aaliyah Smith. Lewis briefly retook the lead on its own layup, but Joseph knotted the score at 63 with a bucket before Cabrera stole the ball and hit a layup to put Lincoln ahead, 65-63.

Lewis managed to draw a late foul and made both of its shots at the line to tie the score once again with 11 ticks left on the clock. In the final second of the game, however, Joseph drained a jumper for the game-winning basket, which gave Lincoln its first-ever road GLVC victory.

Cabrera finished with six points and two assists while Taelyn Smith pulled down a rebound and Aaliyah Smith ended the day with four points, three boards, two steals and a block. Kennedy Jones matched Joseph with five steals and dished a team-high three assists to go with two points and a rebound.

Bella Borgos ended the day with eight points, a board and a steal, and Hallie Williamson added two points, a pair of rebounds and a steal to the winning cause. Kaleah Toran rounded out the Blue Tigers with a block, a steal and an assist.

The Blue Tigers will now be off until Sunday, Dec. 14, when Lincoln travels to Emporia, Kan. to play Emporia State in a 1:30 p.m. CST showdown.
