Blue Tigers Use Big Fourth Quarter to Beat Bearcats

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln women's basketball team drained eight treys in the second half and scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to beat Southwest Baptist, 59-54, in the GLVC opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 29).

Laini Joseph filled the stat sheet with a game-high 19 points, a team-high eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Bella Borgos made five three-pointers and ended the day with 17 points, five boards, a steal and an assist. Rounding out LU's double-digit scorers was Hallie Williamson with 11 points, five rebounds and an assist.

Southwest Baptist (2-4, 0-1 GLVC) took a three-point lead into halftime and led by 11 with just over six minutes to play in the third. Lincoln (3-3, 1-0 GLVC) made four treys to pull within 40-38, and a layup from Aaliyah Smith later tied the game at 42. SBU scored one more time in the period to enter the fourth quarter with a 44-42 advantage.

With 7:22 remaining in the game and the score tied at 47, the contest was paused due to an issue with water on the floor. When play resumed, the Bearcats scored four-straight points, but Joseph made a jumper and Borgos connected on a triple to give Lincoln a 52-51 lead. The Blue Tigers would not trail again, as Joseph drained a three and later hit a pair of free throws to put LU ahead, 57-51, entering the final 10 seconds of the contest.

Aaliyah Smith finished the game with eight points, four boards and a steal while Taelyn Smith rounded out the scoring with four points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Lincoln made evey one of its free throw attempts and defensively held SBU to .311 shooting overall and .241 beyond the arc. The Blue Tigers also forced the Bearcats into 17 turnovers.

Kennedy Jones led LU with five assists and grabbed two rebounds while notching a steal. Isis Sanders collected three rebounds and Kaleah Toran had one.

Lincoln is back in Jason Gym on Monday night (Dec. 1) to host Missouri S&T at 5:30 p.m. CST.
