JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln football team scored 14 points on special teams, but the Blue Tigers fell to William Jewell, 48-20, on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 21).
The highlight of the game for the Blue Tigers came on a blocked kick returned for a touchdown during the fourth quarter. With 4:35 remaining, William Jewell (3-0, 1-0 GLVC) lined up to attempt a 33-yard field goal and
Vez Carter got a hand on the ball to deflect it to the ground.
Ke'Ron Blankumsee scooped it up and dashed 74 yards to the opposite end zone for LU's second touchdown of the afternoon. It was one of two blocks for the Blue Tigers, as Blankumsee deflected a 28-yard attempt by the Cardinals in the first quarter.
On the opening drive of the game,
Isaiah Tate connected with
Armani Turner on a 42-yard pass to put Lincoln (0-3, 0-3 GLVC) in William Jewell territory and
Mo Alwaely later provided the first points of the contest with a 36-yard field goal. The Cardinals scored a touchdown on their opening possession on a 24-yard pass after converting on a fourth down attempt and the score remained 7-3 through the first 15 minutes of play. WJC, however, scored 24 points in the second quarter to take control of the ballgame.
Alwaely closed the day's scoring by making a 43-yard field goal with 1:29 left in the game. Lincoln's other score of the day was set up by an interception by
Rakeim Ashford, who ran the ball back to the WJC seven-yard line.
LaMarco Yates ran three yards on the first play of the drive and then scored on a four-yard scamper with 11:23 left in the contest.
The Lincoln defense racked up 12 tackles for loss as
Donte Moore, who had six total tackles, and Carter each registered a sack.
Jacob McGhee led LU with 3.5 tackles for loss and provided eight total takedowns while
Jordan Hoskins posted a team-high 11 tackles, including one for a loss.
Jeremiah Gill had five tackles, one of which resulted in a loss of yardage, and
Dontonio Moore finished with four tackles. Blankumsee,
Cory Macon,
Nathan Harden and
Zenin Hall each broke up passes.
Alwaely averaged 64.0 yards on kickoffs with three touchbacks and remained perfect on both field goal and point after attempts this season.
Clayton Winkler averaged 57.5 yards on punts with one kick traveling 68 yards.
Kellen Porter led the LU rushing attack with 32 yards while Tate finished with 139 passing yards and Turned added 53 receiving yards.
Darian Fletcher had a 39 kickoff return and
Tobias Williams returned a kick 27 yards.
The Blue Tigers will be on the road next weekend, traveling to Bolivar, Mo. to play Southwest Baptist in a 1:00 p.m. CDT showdown on Saturday (Sept. 28).
