Big First Quarter Leads Washburn Past Lincoln, 24-10


JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Washburn scored 17 points in the opening quarter and held off a late rally by the Lincoln football team as the Blue Tigers dropped a 24-10 decision to the Ichabods on Saturday night (Sept. 16).

Aderias Ealy caught five passes for a game-high 118 yards, and scored in the fourth quarter on a 54-yard pass from Xzavier Vaughn. Omar Allen led the Blue Tigers with 34 yards on the ground and Vaughn completed 12 of his 17 pass attempts for 140 yards. 

Lincoln (0-3) played Washburn (1-2) tough defensively for most of the night. LU held WU to a field goal on its first drive of the game, but the Ichabods scored back-to-back touchdowns for the big lead at the end of the first quarter. Prior to the start of the second stanza, lightning in the Jefferson City are forced a stoppage that lasted for just over an hour.

Following the delay, the Blue Tigers shut down the Ichabods in the second quarter, keeping the score at 17-0 entering halftime. The Ichabods on a 48-yard pass late in the third quarter, but those were the only points by Washburn in the second half. 

Cory Macon broke up a fourth-down pass to set up LU at its own 46 for its first drive of the final quarter, and Vaughn connected with Ealy on the first play for that long touchdown. Mo Alwaely made the extra point, then later kicked a 30-yard field goal that was set up by a 42-yard reception by Ealy. Lincoln defensively held Washburn to 9-for-16 on third down attempts and 1-for-4 on fourth down tries. 

The LU defense made seven tackles for loss, with Ian Hackney, who finished with a team-high 12 tackles, recording a sack. Isiah McKenzie, who also notched a sack, matched Wes Hollie, who had a tackle for loss, with five tackles, and Elijah Juarez supplied 11 tackles, a tackle for loss, and broke up a pass to end a WU drive. Cory Macon and Jordan Batts combined for a tackle for loss, and Macon, who also broke up a pass, forced a fumble while finishing with nine tackles.

TJ Jasper broke up two passes and recorded six takedowns, David Kinard was credited with a hurry and a break-up, Bryant Coley made four tackles and Cyris Davis had a break-up, a tackle for loss and three takedowns. Michael Harrison additionally ended the night with a tackle for loss and a broken up pass while Vez Carter had a hurry.

Clayton Winkler averaged 36.4 yards on eight punts with a long of 60-yards, and four of his kicks pinned Washburn inside the 20. Ali Wells led LU with 39 yards on kick returns while Alwaely averaged 62.5 yards on kickoffs.

Up next for Lincoln is a road trip to Maryville, Mo. to play Northwest Missouri next Saturday (Sept. 23). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CDT.
