Blue Tigers Drop Home Opener in Overtime

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Lincoln women's basketball team played Newman evenly for most of the night, but the Jets used a 12-5 run in overtime to beat the Blue Tigers, 74-67, on Thursday evening (Dec. 1). It was the first home game of the season for the Blue Tigers, who opened 2022-23 with a pair of neutral site games and three road contests.

After Newman (4-2, 1-0 MIAA) took a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the teams matched each other score-for-score the remainder of regulation. Each team scored 20 points in the second quarter, with Aysia Arrowood's free throw sending the game into halftime with the Jets clinging to a 35-34 lead. In the third quarter, a buzzer-beating layup for Newman gave each team 18 points for the period.

Lincoln (1-5, 0-2 MIAA) rallied from a six-point deficit over the final five minutes of the fourth quarter, beginning with a fast break layup from Le'Yanna McGinnis. Ashlyn Alloway later hit a jumper, and Saniya Simmons tied the score at 60 on her bucket with just under two minutes to play. With 1:01 on the clock, Alloway made a pair of free throws to give LU a 62-60 advantage, but Newman answered with a layup on its ensuing possession.

An offensive foul with 21 ticks left on the clock gave the ball to the Blue Tigers for a potential game-winning shot, but time ran out before LU could attempt a basket. In overtime, Newman broke a 67-67 tie on a three-pointer from the corner, and the Jets later sealed the game by making four-straight shots at the line.

Niyah Jackson and Alloway each scored 12 points and collected four rebounds, with Jackson additionally leading LU with six assists while tallying three steals. Arrowood finished with 10 points while McGinnis came off the bench to provide seven points, six boards and three blocks. Simmons ended the day with nine points, a pair of assists, three rebounds and a team-high five steals.

Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Bello each chipped in four points, and Miriam Bazylewicz added five points and two rebounds to the Lincoln cause. AJ Bradley contributed two points and a pair of rebounds, and Mercy Gonzalez led Lincoln with seven rebounds while scoring two points and recording a steal. For the day, Lincoln forced Newman into 24 turnovers and notched 13 steals while giving the ball away on just 11 occasions.

The Blue Tigers will remain at home on Saturday (Dec. 3) to host Central Oklahoma at 1:00 p.m. CST.
