JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -
Leslie Callahan batted in three runs, including two on a triple, as the Lincoln softball team beat Missouri S&T, 6-4, in the first game of a double-header on Tuesday (April 6). Lincoln ended up splitting the twinbill, as the Miners took game two, 5-2.
In the opener, Missouri S&T struck first, bringing in runs on a triple and a base hit through the middle in the top of the second for an early 2-0 advantage. Lincoln answered in the bottom of the frame, cutting the deficit in half as
Jordan Hollon scored on a fielder's choice.
Later in the bottom of the second,
Alex Miller, who batted in Hollon, and
Ashton Stalling both scored on Callahan's triple, as she drove the ball deep into right field to give Lincoln its first lead of the afternoon. In the next at-bat,
Jordan Lawson hit one through the middle to bring in Callahan for a 4-2 Blue Tiger lead.
After forcing the Miners to go three-up, three-down in the next two frames, Miller led the bottom of the fourth off with a double, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a base hit bunt laid down by Callahan. Missouri S&T got back within one in the fifth with a two-run homer, but Lincoln added an insurance run in the sixth when
Kendra Holt scored on a single by Miller.
Lawson, Miller and Callahan each had two hits while Rymer tallied one, and
Tressa Hughes earned the win in the circle while
Maddie Welker notched a save. Holt had 10 putouts to lead the defense, and Hughes, Hollon and Rymer each turned three assists.
In Tuesday's second game, Missouri S&T opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and an RBI double in the third, but Lincoln tied the game at two on a double by Hollon in the bottom of the third. Callahan reach after being hit by a pitch, and Lawson got on board via an error. LU made the Miners pay for the miscues, as Hollon found an opening in left field for a two-base smash that plated both runners.
The score would remain 2-2 going into the sixth, but the Miners broke the tie by plating a run on a fielder's choice. The Miners added two more scores in the seventh for the three-run victory.
Hollon had two hits in the contest, and Miller struck out two in a complete-game effort in the circle. Holt led LU with six putouts and Callahan and Hollon each had four. Hollon turned three assists, and Callahan, Miller and
Jacqueline Marquez each rcorded two.
Lincoln is back on the road this weekend, starting on Saturday (April 10), as the Blue Tigers travel to Emporia, Kan. for an MIAA double-header against Emporia State. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CDT.
