Jets Edge Blue Tigers, 7-6

WICHITA, Kan. - The Lincoln softball team entered the final frame of the first game of its double-header on Saturday (March 27) against Newman with the lead, but the Jets rallied to slip past the Blue Tigers, 7-6. In the second game, Newman won, 10-2.

The Jets scored first in Saturday's opener, but consecutive base hits from Alex Miller and Tressa Hughes allowed Jordan Hollon to score in the top of the second to tie the game at one run apiece. Kendra Holt later gave LU its first lead of the afternoon with a solo homerun to lead off the fourth inning.

Hollon hit a homerun in the top of the sixth that drove in Holt, doubling Lincoln's run total and bringing the lead to 4-1 over the Jets. An RBI double allowed Newman (5-18, 3-9 MIAA) to cut the LU lead in half in the bottom half of the inning, but Lincoln (3-16-1, 1-9 MIAA) went back to work in the top of the seventh. A double steal allowed Jordan Lawson to take home plate, and a double by Holt drove in Emily Williams for a 6-2 Lincoln lead.

The Blue Tigers opened the final half-inning by forcing a fly out, but then Newman got hot at the plate, hitting four-straight singles to drive in its third and fourth runs. LU caught a Jet runner stealing for the second out, but back-to-back singles later in the frame resulted in Newman tying the game. One more base hit brought in a runner from third to complete the NU comeback.

Tressa Hughes struck out three Newman batters in the opener, and Hollon and Holt each had two hits, two RBI and two runs. Williams, Miller, Lawson and Hughes had LU's other hits of the contest, and Lawson and Williams led the Blue Tigers with five putouts apiece. Bekah Kirker provided a pair of assists.

In the second game of the day, Lincoln racked up six hits, but allowed eight as Newman took advantage of two big innings to earn the victory. A pair of three-RBI doubles, one in each of the second and third frames, made the difference as NU scored five runs in each of those frames.

Both of Lincoln's runs in the contest came in the third inning, which began with a lead-off single by Jacqueline Marquez. A double from Holt advanced Marquez to third, and a base hit by Williams brought her home. Miller later plated Holt with a base hit through the left side.

Holt had a team-high eight putouts, and Kirker led LU with three assists while Hollon and Alivia Rymer were next with two apiece. Hollon and Rymer each had a hit.

Lincoln remains on the road on Tuesday (March 30) to play a non-conference double-header against Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo. starting at 1:00 p.m. CDT.
