Drayton Scores 28, But Hillcats Edge Blue Tigers

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Quinton Drayton scored a game-high 28 points while newcomer Derrick Woods chipped in 21, but the Lincoln men's basketball team fell to Rogers State, 82-80, on Thursday (Jan. 21).

Drayton also led Lincoln with eight rebounds and dished three assists while Woods finished with six boards. Yaniel Vidal also reached double figures, scoring 13 to go with two rebounds.

Rogers State (6-5, 6-5 MIAA) led for most of the evening, holding a 45-40 advantage at halftime and taking a 56-47 lead with 13:54 to play. Back-to-back layups allowed the Blue Tigers to pull within five, and, following a bucket from RSU, Vidal drained a three before Ni'Sean Rigmaiden scored off a steal to make it a 58-56 ballgame. RIgmaiden ended the night with seven points, six rebounds and four assists.

The teams traded baskets, then Drayton gave Lincoln (6-3, 6-3 MIAA) its first lead of the second half by making a three-pointer for a 61-60 Blue Tigers advantage. Vidal followed with a jumper, but a trey by Rogers State knotted the score up at 63. After the teams traded leads, RSU hit a layup for a 71-69 lead and later made a free throw, but a Rigmaiden trey tied the game back up at 72. Rogers State scored the next five points, however, and 81-77 with 22 seconds remaining.

Another trey by VIdal pulled the Blue Tigers to within one, and Lincoln was forced to foul, sending RSU to the line. The Hillcats made the first free throw, but the second was no good, giving LU one last possession with just under 10 seconds left on the clock. Lincoln drove to the basket, but was unable to put up a shot as time expired.

Cameron Potts and Jordan Notch each scored four points, with Potts supplying seven rebounds and a team-high five assists. Mekhi Kimble rounded out the scoring with three points, two rebounds, a block and a steal.

The Blue Tigers remain at home on Saturday (Jan. 23), hosting Northeastern State at 3:00 p.m. CST.
