Late Free Throws the Difference as LU Falls to UCM


WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Three-point shooting and free throws were the main difference as the Lincoln men's basketball team fell to Central Missouri, 69-62, on Tuesday night (Feb. 18).

In a game featuring 13 ties and 16 lead changes, it all came down to the line in the final 1:25. After both teams were called for fouls, Alafia Oluwasogo made two shots at the charity stripe to tie the game at 62. Central Missouri (10-15, 5-11 MIAA) answered by making both of its free throws, and drew another foul with 34 seconds to play.

After making two more free throws to go up 66-62, the Mules got a defensive rebound off a missed LU jump shot, forcing Lincoln (10-15, 7-9 MIAA) to foul. UCM went just one-for-two, giving the ball back to LU with 24 ticks left on the clock. The Blue Tigers missed two more baskets while Central Missouri made two more free throws to close the game on a 7-0 run, with every point coming at the line.

For the game, Central Missouri made nine treys and went 16-for-18 at the free throw line. Lincoln had the better field goal percentage, shooting at a .456 clip while limiting the Mules to .386 shooting, but the Blue Tigers made just two buckets from three-point land on the evening.

Cameron Potts led Lincoln in points (18) and rebounds (eight), and tied L'Kielynn Taylor with four assists. Taylor had four boards and eight points to go with a steal, and Jonell Burton tallied 14 points and five boards. Marcel Burton pulled down five rebounds and Oluwasogo grabbed four, with both players scoring 10 points apiece.

Lamont Ballard, Jr. closed the scoring for LU with two points, two assists and three rebounds, and Joe Davis grabbed two boards while Jordan Notch had one.

Lincoln heads to Topeka, Kan. on Saturday (Feb. 22) to play Washburn at 3:00 p.m. CST.
