Blue Tigers Hold Off Lopers for a 64-61 Win


JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Jonell Burton scored 17 points, L'Kielynn Taylor grabbed 10 rebounds and the Lincoln men's basketball team held off a last minute comeback bid from Nebraska Kearney to win, 64-61, on Thursday night (Feb. 13).

Jonell Burton also finished with three rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal, and Jordan Notch added 14 points, a block and three boards to the winning effort. Taylor scored eight points and led LU with five assists and three steals.

Lincoln (9-14, 6-8 MIAA) led for nearly the entire game, shooting .481 from the field while out-rebounding the Lopers, 34-28. Nebraska Kearney (14-9, 8-6 MIAA) made eight treys on 26 attempts (.308) to stay in the game, as the Blue Tigers never led by more than 11 with the lead staying in single digits for much of the evening.

After taking a 28-25 lead into halftime, the Blue Tigers shot .556 overall and .667 from long distance over the final 20 minutes. Lincoln limited the Lopers to .273 shooting from beyond the arc, but the Lopers shot at a .481 clip in the second half to match LU with 36 points for the half.

Over the final 7:30, UNK pulled within three on three separate occasions, but a big layup by Alafia Oluwasogo helped Lincoln seal the victory. Oluwasogo scored eight points and grabbed three boards on the evening, and Marcel Burton chipped in seven points, including making a key free throw in the final seconds to keep it a two-score contest.

Marcus Cohen added six points, six boards and four assists, and Lamont Ballard, Jr. contributed four points, three assists and two steals. Cameron Potts additionally came off the bench to pull down four rebounds.

Lincoln will close out the home portion of its 2019-20 schedule on Saturday (Feb. 15) when the Blue Tigers host Fort Hays State at 3:00 p.m. CST.
