Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting Leads Lincoln to a 2-1 Win

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Jordan Lawson gave up just one run in a complete game effort while Trista Heavin hit her third home run of the season to help the Lincoln softball team defeat Central Missouri, 2-1, on Friday (April 26). The victory came in the first contest of a double-header, with the Jennies rebounding to win that game, 10-2.

Lawson had a strikeout and allowed just six hits to pick up her first victory of the season inside the circle. Camryn Pryor and Rachael Balke had two hits apiece in the win, with Mykenzie Livesay and Gabi McGinty tallying singles as the Blue Tigers finished with a 7-6 advantage at the plate.

Lincoln defensively opened the game with a pair of three-up, three-down frames, then stranded a UCM runner at second to keep the game scoreless through three. The Jennies ended up getting on the board in the fourth inning, as Central Missouri used back-to-back doubles to create a 1-0 advantage.

Heavin opened the top of the fifth with her home run over the center field wall to tie the game, but the Lincoln offense wasn't done. Bekah Kirker was issued a walk, then took second on a single up the middle by Pryor. That brought up Balke, who had the game-winning RBI as her hit into left field allowed Kirker to score.

Over the next two innings, the Blue Tigers stranded three Jenny base-runners, including preventing a runner on third from scoring with a tag for a fielder's choice. Lawson then forced a pair of fly outs in the bottom of the seventh before sealing the win with a strikeout for LU's third defensive 1-2-3 inning. Pryor led the Blue Tigers with five putouts, and Lawson turned three assists.

In the night cap, Central Missouri (32-18, 16-8 MIAA) scored three runs in each of the first two innings, and kept the Blue Tigers off the board until the fifth to earn the series split. Heavin and Kirker scored Lincoln's runs on a base hit through the right side by Pryor, who led LU (5-43, 2-22 MIAA) with two hits in the contest.

Lawson, Tori Nienhueser and Emily Williams each had a hit, and Pryor led the defense with four putouts while Balke was next with three. Livesay provided two assists.

Lincoln will close the 2019 season on Saturday (April 27) with a trip to Bolivar, Mo. for a double-header against Southwest Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CDT.
