OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Lincoln softball team totaled 18 hits, including four each by
Jordan Lawson and
Alyssa Schulte, to earn a 10-2 six-inning win over Texas College on Friday afternoon (March 2). Prior to that contest, the Blue Tigers dropped an 8-1 decision to NCAA Division I program Texas Southern, with both games played at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City as part of the National HBCU Softball Classic.
Lawson got the scoring going in LU's win in the bottom of the first inning, driving in
Kiley Kerr on a double. Schulte scored in the second inning on a base hit by
Camryn Pryor, but Texas College (0-4) answered with an RBI single in the top of the third. Lawson later gave Lincoln (3-7) back a two-run lead with her second RBI of the contest, this one a single through the left side that brought in
Mykenzie Livesay.
Chelsey Kerr, who had three hits in the victory, plated
Tori Nienhueser on a double in the fifth, and Pryor later helped increase LU's lead to 6-1 on a sacrifice fly that scored Schulte. An RBI double in the top of the sixth pulled the Steers to within four, but four-straight RBI singles allowed the Blue Tigers to end the game early.
Pryor, Nienhueser and
Kiley Kerr each finished with two hits apiece, with Pryor tallying three RBI while
Chelsey Kerr, Lawson and Nienhueser were each responsible for two.
Kiley Kerr and Schulte each stole bases, and Lawson had a pair of doubles while
Kiley Kerr recorded a triple.
Delayne Patton earned the complete game win and notched six strikeouts against just one walk.
Emily Williams led LU defensively with six putouts and
Chelsey Kerr turned two assists.
It was another RBI by Lawson that led to Lincoln's win in the first game of the day, as she drove in Pryor after a base hit by
Rachael Balke. Texas Southern (6-3) scored twice in the first inning and twice in the fifth, but it was a four-run fourth frame that allowed TSU to take control of the contest.
Lincoln had five hits in the loss, including two by Pryor and one by Livesay. Pryor also had a team-high five putouts, with Balke next at four, and
Chelsey Kerr had two assists.
The Blue Tigers will remain in Oklahoma City to continue the National HBCU Softball Classic with games at 8:30 a.m. CST vs. Grambling State and 2:30 p.m. CST against Southern.
