LU Closes Homestand With Loss to Missouri S&T

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri S&T hit a pair of homeruns, including a grand slam, to hand the Lincoln softball team a pair of losses in the final games of a six-game home stretch on Wednesday afternoon (March 14). The Blue Tigers dropped the first contest, 13-4, and the second, 10-0.

Missouri S&T (11-11) opened the scoring in the first game with the grand slam, and scored five runs in the opening frame before tacking on three more in the top of the third. Lincoln's (3-15) offense came to life in the bottom of the third, as Jordan Lawson plated Kiley Kerr and Rachael Balke on a bases-clearing double. Tori Nienhueser followed with a double of her own to bring in Lawson, and then scored on a base hit from Camryn Pryor to cut the Lady Miner lead in half.

Neither team was able to push a run past the plate in the fourth inning, but Missouri S&T scored twice in the fifth before closing the game with three more runs in the seventh inning. Lincoln finished the game with seven hits, including two each by Pryor and Nienhueser and one apiece from Kerr and Emily Williams.

Pryor had 10 putouts to lead LU defensively, and Kerr and Nienhueser each had three. Mykenzie Livesay turned a team-high five assists, and Andrea Wanta was next with three.

In the second game, Missouri S&T scored twice in the top of the first, and then stranded LU runners on first and third to hold on to a 2-0 advantage early. Livesay reached third base in the second inning, and Lawson was stranded in the third, but the Lady Miners used a pair of three-up, three-down innings in the fourth and fifth frames to stave off the Lincoln offense. Missouri S&T, meanwhile, ended the game early with an eight-run fourth inning.

Alyssa Schulte had a strikeout as LU's closer, and Pryor tallied five putouts while Lawson finished with four. Nienhueser, Lawson and Balke had hits for LU, with Nienhueser also turning three assists.

The Blue Tigers will be on the road for four games in Hays, Kan. this weekend, starting on Friday (March 16) with a double-header against Fort Hays State at 2:00 p.m. CDT. Lincoln will then remain in Hays to take on Nebraska Kearney on Saturday (March 17) in a 1:00 p.m. CDT twinbill that was moved from UNK's campus due to expected inclement weather.
