TOPEKA, Kan. - Washburn took advantage of some timely hits to hand the Lincoln softball team a pair of losses on Friday (March 24). The Ichabods beat LU, 7-0, in the first game and pulled away late in the second for a 6-1 win.
In the opener, Washburn (15-22, 3-7 MIAA) opened the scoring with a solo homerun in the second inning and tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Lincoln (3-21, 0-4 MIAA) was able to keep its deficit at three until the sixth inning, when a two-run homer led to WU pushing four more runs across the plate.
Jordan Lawson had Lincoln's only hit of the contest, a double, and
Tori Nienhueser led the LU defense with seven putouts. Lawson provided three assists.
In the second game, Washburn hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, but Lincoln was able to cut the lead down to one in the top of the second. Lawson hit her second double of the afternoon after
Macie Kinsey was issued a walk, and
Lauren Morrow followed by hitting into a groundout to bring in Kinsey.
The contest remained a 2-1 affair until the fifth inning, when Washburn was able to add three runs. The Ichabods later plated another score in the sixth on another homerun.
Lawson finished with two hits in the nightcap, and pitcher
Sarah Westhoff racked up four strikeouts. Kinsey led LU with six putouts while
Maci Marshall and
Mykenzie Livesay each had four. Livesay and Nienhueser each provided three assists.
The Blue Tigers will be back in action on Saturday (March 25) as Lincoln travels to Emporia, Kan. for a double-header against Emporia State. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CDT.
