ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Lincoln women's basketball team used a dominant third-quarter effort to erase an 11-point halftime deficit and beat Lindenwood, 71-67, in overtime on Tuesday (Feb. 14).
Khadijah Ellison had a terrific all-around performance, scoring 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds to go with five blocks and four steals. Ellison led the Blue Tigers in all four statistical categories.
Azaria Nave, meanwhile, chipped in 11 points and grabbed three boards to go with an assist.
Also scoring in double figures was
Hunter Yoakum, who tallied 13 points, five rebounds and a team-high four assists. With that performance, Yoakum has reached 1,148 career points, the second-most all-time in the history of the Lincoln women's basketball team. Yoakum surpassed the 1,139 points scored by Sheila Lee between 1982-85 and now trails only Andrea Sykes (1,290 points between 1995-99) on LU's all-time list.
The Blue Tigers shot .400 from the floor in the first period en route to a 17-15 lead through the game's first 10 minutes. The second quarter belonged to the Lady Lions, however, as Lindenwood shot .625 from the floor and out-scored the Blue Tigers, 21-8.
Facing a 36-25 halftime deficit, Lincoln (5-18, 4-12 MIAA) responded with one of its best third quarters of the season. The Blue Tigers out-scored the Lady Lions, 19-5, in that period, holding Lindenwood (10-14, 5-11) to a field goal percentage of .077. Lincoln built a six-point lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by Yoakum, but Lindenwood went on a 7-0 run to re-take the lead.
The contest featured 17 lead changes and 12 ties, and the score was tied four times throughout the final seven minutes of regulation. With 51 seconds remaining, Ellison hit a layup to knot the score at 58. Lindenwood missed a pair of free throws during the ensuing possession, setting Lincoln up for a potential game-winning shot with 18.8 seconds on the clock. With two seconds remaining, Lincoln had a chance to win on a layup, but the shot went off the backboard and the game entered overtime.
Lindenwood captured the momentum early in the extra frame, scoring the first five points of the period before taking a 65-60 lead with 2:41 remaining. Nave hit a three to pull Lincoln within two, and she later tied the game again with a pair of free throws. Three more shots at the line gave Lincoln a 68-65 cushion, but Lindenwood made a pair of free throws to cut the lead down to one.
With 19 ticks left on the clock, Nave went one-for-two at the line to increase Lincoln's lead to 69-67. Lindenwood missed a three-pointer on its end of the court and was forced to foul. With 3.2 seconds remaining,
Shamirah Johnson made both of her free throw attempts, sealing the four-point victory for Lincoln.
Johnson finished her night with seven points, five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
Tyler Brown-Henderson scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds while providing a pair of takeaways.
Tempary Gunter ended the evening fourth on the scoring chart with nine points, two rebounds, an assist and a block.
Citlali Lopez contributed five points, three boards, two assists and a steal to the winning cause, and
Kailey Foster rounded out the scoring with a free throw. Foster also had a rebound.
Lincoln will continue a four-game road trip on Tuesday night (Feb. 16) with a trip to Warrensburg, Mo. to play Central Missouri. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CST.
