Gorillas Rally to Beat the Blue Tigers

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Lincoln baseball team out-hit Pittsburg State, 13-11, but the Gorillas rallied in the eighth inning to hand the Blue Tigers a 10-8 loss on Friday (April 8).

Lincoln opened the scoring with Alex Ludwick bringing home Laban Petzoldt on a single into right field in the top of the first, but the Gorillas tied the game in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly. Pittsburg State then brought in five runs in the bottom of the second.

The Blue Tigers got back on the board with a homerun by Mason Price in the fourth, then used a big fifth inning to re-take the lead. Ludwick hit a two-run homer, scoring Dillon Walker in the process, and Price later came home on a base hit by Zach Anderson. Daniel Castillo then hit LU's third homerun of the afternoon, scoring Anderson and Kaleb Davis to give Lincoln an 8-6 advantage.

Lincoln (1-31, 0-22 MIAA) had a chance to add to its lead in the seventh, as Ludwick led the frame off with a double, and Price reached base on balls. A double play allowed Ludwick to move to third, and Anderson reached on a walk, but a pop up ended the inning. Pittsburg State (7-24, 2-20 MIAA) took advantage in the bottom of the frame, pulling to within 8-7 on an RBI double.

Pittsburg State took advantage of three hits and a pair of Lincoln errors to plate three runs in the eighth and take a 10-8 lead. The Blue Tigers had one final opportunity in the ninth, and Davis got on board with a single. A wild pitch put Anderson on base, but a strikeout ended the contest.

Ludwick led LU with three hits and three RBI. Davis, Anderson and Castillo each had two hits, with Castillo also tallying three RBI. Petzoldt, Walker, Price and Nick Lovell also had one hit apiece.

Cody Stegemann pitched the first 7.1 frames and struck out two Gorilla batters. Davis led the defense with six putouts and Lovell recorded four while Anderson and Mike Million each tallied three. Stegemann finished with a team-high four assists, and Ludwick and Kolton Clark each provided two.

The Blue Tigers will remain in Pittsburg to play the Gorillas on Saturday (April 9) at 3:00 p.m. CDT.
