LU Drops Two to Pitt State

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Pittsburg State tallied 22 hits to sweep a double-header against the Lincoln softball team on Sunday (April 3). The Gorillas won the first game, 11-0, in five innings before taking the second, 8-1.

In the opener, the difference was a second inning in which Pittsburg State plated eight runs. Lincoln gave up just three in the other frames, including none in the third. The Blue Tigers stranded at least one runner in all five innings, including two in the fourth, including three in scoring position.

Jessica Wolken and Sarah Westhoff each had hits for Lincoln while Madison Ragar struck out three PSU batters as the game's closer. Tori Nienhueser led LU with four putouts, and Wolken, Avery Myers and Lauren Stamp each tallied two apiece. Wolken also led LU with three assists.

In the second game, it was Lincoln (4-35, 3-17 MIAA) striking first, as Wolken scored on an RBI single by Myers. Wolken initially got on base via a double, and advanced to third on a fielding error. Nienhueser also had a base hit in the top of the first.

Pittsburg State (32-9, 16-0 MIAA) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, and the two teams proceeded to play three innings of scoreless softball. The Gorillas broke the tie three runs in the fourth, then plated three more scores in the fifth to take control of the contest. The Blue Tigers advanced a runner to third in the fourth, but were unable to bring in any more runs.

Sarah Westhoff led Lincoln with two hits while Stamp finished with one. Stamp led LU with seven putouts while Nienhueser tallied four and Kiley Kerr recorded three. Spencer Silva finished with three assists and Wolken and Nienhueser each turned two.

The Blue Tigers will step out of conference play on Wednesday (April 6) to visit Missouri S&T in Rolla, Mo. for a 2:30 p.m. CDT double-header.
