Blue Tigers Fall to No. 10 Fort Hays State


HAYS, Kan. - Six Blue Tigers scored at least seven points, but the Lincoln women's basketball team fell to Fort Hays State, 91-63, on Saturday (Feb. 20).

Hunter Yoakum led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points and grabbed two rebounds while dishing an assist. Dorian Briggs and Jasmine Guthrie each scored 11, with Briggs also tallying three assists, a rebound and a block. Guthrie added four boards to the Lincoln cause.

Lizzie Nessling led the Blue Tigers in rebounding with eight and scored seven points to go with three assists. Azaria Nave just missed double digits with nine points and grabbed five rebounds to go with three assists. Asia McCaskill was next on the scoring chart with eight points, three boards and an assist.

The Blue Tigers made eight of their 18 attempts from long range (.444) while holding FHSU to just five makes in 19 tries (.263). Fort Hays State, ranked No. 10 in the nation in the WBCA/USA Today Division II poll, shot .441 from the floor while Lincoln shot .367. FHSU also out-rebounded Lincoln, 45-36, and committed only five turnovers while forcing the Blue Tigers into 16.

It was just a nine-point game at halftime, as Lincoln (8-18, 4-16 MIAA) out-scored Fort Hays State (23-3, 17-3 MIAA), 20-18, in the second quarter to pull within 43-34 at the break. The Blue Tigers shot .520 overall and .500 in the first half while limiting FHSU to just one made three-pointer.

Fort Hays State scored the first five points of the third quarter, but Lincoln came back to pull within 49-41 on a Yoakum layup with 6:54 left on the clock. FHSU responded with a 12-1 run, however, and led 65-48 at the end of the period. Fort Hays State remained hot in the fourth quarter, out-scoring Lincoln 26-15 to seal the win.

Sarah Neptune contributed two points, two boards, two assists and a steal to the Lincoln effort while Zuri Hill added a pair of rebounds.

Lincoln will close out the 2015-16 regular season at home with two games at Jason Gym, starting on Wednesday (Feb. 24) with a 5:30 p.m. CST contest against Southwest Baptist.
