Baseball Drops Twinbill to Missouri S&T

ROLLA, Mo. - The Lincoln baseball team played its first true road games of 2016 on Saturday (Feb. 20), as LU dropped a pair of games at Missouri S&T. The Miners edged the Blue Tigers with a late-inning run to take the first game, 1-0, and capitalized on some LU miscues to win the second, 8-2.

Missouri S&T broke the scoreless tie in the first contest in the bottom of the fifth inning, as a two-out double brought in the game's only run. Lincoln had a couple good chances to score before that play, including in the fourth inning, when Mike Million reached on an error and took second on a base hit by Dillon Walker. Million was able to get to third on a double play, and Kaleb Davis was issued a walk to give LU a pair of base runners. A fly-out, however, ended the inning.

Kolton Clark led the fifth inning off with a hit, but ended up being thrown out as he attempted to steal second. That ended up being LU's final shot at a run, as both teams relied on strong pitching to keep it a 1-0 contest.

Cody Stegemann pitched the complete game and struck out two while allowing just six hits and the one run. Walker and Davis tied for the team lead with five putouts apiece while Stegemann and Zach Anderson each turned a pair of assists.

In the second game, only three of the Miners' eight runs were earned, as Lincoln (0-6) committed five errors. The Blue Tigers tallied six hits while Missouri S&T (2-0) finished with nine. The Miners also committed a pair of errors.

After a scoreless first inning, Lincoln pushed the game's first run across the plate in the top of the second as a Jeffery Jackson single drove in Jackson Walker. The Miners were able to answer with four runs in the bottom half of the frame, all of which were unearned. The Blue Tigers pulled to within 4-2 in the top of the third, as a two-out base hit from Davis scored Mason Price from second.

That was as close as LU would come, however, as Missouri S&T padded its lead with two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. Jackson Walker ended up being stranded on third in the top of the sixth due to a double play, and Dillon Walker was stranded on third in the top of the eighth, with both players representing Lincoln's best opportunities at cutting into the deficit.

Dillon Walker went 3-for-4 at the plate while starter Zach Maskill struck out two in 3.2 innings of work. Daniel Castillo pitched two complete frames and fanned three while closer Cameron Massman also notched a strikeout. Defensively, Davis led LU with seven putouts and Anderson had a team-high two assists.

Lincoln will open the home portion of its 2016 slate on Sunday (Feb. 21) when the Blue Tigers host Truman State for a double-header at 12:00 p.m. CST.
