One of the greatest players in the history of the Lincoln baseball program, Marcellus Jones posted batting averages of .380 or better in three of his four seasons as a Blue Tiger. LU's starting catcher between 1972-75, Jones led the MIAA in doubles with 17 in 1973 en route to earning all-league honors by the conference and honorable mention All-American status by Sports Illustrated. The Blue Tigers finished second in the MIAA standings that season. Jones became the team's captain in 1974 and 1975, batting .390 as a junior and .393 as a senior. Following his stellar career, Jones was offered a spot on the Pulaski Phillies, a minor league program of the Philadelphia Phillies, but turned it down to pursue a master's degree and a successful career as the vice president of the Kinslow Sonic Group.
