Another great Lincoln basketball player, James Long, Jr. earned multiple team awards for his play as a Blue Tiger from 1952-1955. His leadership on the team earned him the respect of his teammates and coaches, and Long was selected as the team captain during both his junior and senior seasons. A multiple All-Midwest Conference selection, Long was the team's leading scorer in games against Tennessee State, Wilbeforce and Langston, among many others. Long also was valued member of the Lincoln track & field team, winning the high jump event at a Midwest Conference Championship meet with a height of 6'5". After his Lincoln career ended, Long served the country as a member of the United States Army Corps of Engineers and, as a first lieutenant, was selected to the All-Army All-Star team. After completing his time in the military, Long was selected to tryout for the United States Olympic basketball team.
